I grew up in an era where people were polite because it was the right thing to do. My first real job was at AT&T and they believed in great customer service. They would always say, "We'll never be the cheapest, but we'll always give the best customer service"
So I ask, what happened? When did companies get away from making the customer the priority?
I realize that the main purpose is to be profitable, but providing great customer service will create a customer retantion base. Loyal customers are more important than new customers.
i think customer service is no longer a priority because a lot of companies are monopolized within their industry (i.e. utilities, insurance companies)and may possess the viewpoint of "well, where else are they going to go?" outside of that, there is a huge call center environment that we must resort to when seeking assistance and these places have employees who are 1) barely trained and 2) most likely not paid well in addition to call centers having high turnover rates - no consistency.
